Back in 1993, Robert Sears organized the first of what is now known
as Kurling for Kids Charity bonspiel. Back then it was a small undertaking
with less than 50 people curling at the St-Lambert curling club followed by
a pizza dinner and trophy presentations. It was in 1999 that this bonspiel
took on a different purpose; raising funds for the St-Justine Hospital
foundation. St. Justine is a Montreal hospital for children which raises
money to provide better care and facilities for these children. Robert chose
this organization because it holds a special place in his heart.
Hoping to raise $500 in the first year everyone was amazed when the final tally showed $7,000. Improving on that amount was a challenge in the second year but once again the success of the tournament exceeded everyone's expectations when $10,000 was raised. This money was used to purchase very much needed incubator beds for the hospital.
In its third year as a fundraising event, the Kurling for Kids tournament was able to raise over $21,000 which was used to purchase a Micro-Debrideur that is a machine used to help children with Cystic Fibrosis breath during operations. As well, that year 12 curlers set a Guinness World Record by curling for 24 hours consecutively from March 30th, 11:00am until March 31st, 11:00am at the Town of Mount Royal Curling Club.
In 2002 Kurling for Kids had another
phenomenal year and was able to raise $20,000 which was used to purchase an
endoscopic camera for use during surgery.
In 2003 Kurling for Kids continued its upwards trend and raised $25,000 for the Montreal Children's and St-Justine's Hospital Foundations. This money was used to purchase a video fluoroscopy chair and a fetal monitor.
Over the past 12 years, this tournament has grown to almost
600 curlers and our event now takes place at eleven Montreal-Area curling clubs - Town of Mount Royal, Glenmore, Lachine, St. Lambert, Montreal West, Pointe Claire,
Otterburn Memorial Legion, Baie D'Urfe, Ste-Anne's, Royal Montreal and
Mont-Bruno. Along the way, we've set a Guinness World Record for the longest curling game and raised
over $725,000 that has gone to the Sainte-Justine's Montreal Children's Hospital Foundation to buy much needed equipment.
